Hi I have been out of work since the end of September and have been home a lot. I am starting work on Monday, for about 5 or 6 weeks my hours will be 9 am to 6 pm. I think Buddy will be OK with that but after the 6 weeks training I will be going to 10 hour days 4 days a week. I am concerned he will be very upset because he is used to me being around all day and being out of his cage all day. Also I want him to get enough dark time but I want to be with him too. Does anyone else have a schedule like this. Thanks,

Yes a good few years ago...
I kept my birds up later at night so
I had time with them and they
had company...
I found it worked ok...
I'm sure they slept in the day while it was quiet...
They will get use to your hours....
I've always had my birds work around me.. not me around them..
Good luck with the job, I'm sure your tiels will be fine..

I agree with Jan, plus he will have you all for himself for three days a week!
If you leave him well entertained, in a quiet room, maybe with the radio on (I was told that they can get spooked in complete silence) he should be ok. Then he will be out with you when you come back... he will get used to it most probably.
If this is a permanent job and you see that he doesn't adjust to being alone, you might think of a companion for him... but that's in the future, for now just see how it goes.
Congratulations for the new job :)

Yes, playing the radio or the television will help make him feel less alone, and also less likely to spook at odd noises.

Thanks for all the responses. I usually leave the radio playing softly for him when I am gone. I will spend a good 2 hours with him during the days I work if not more. At least an hour in the morning and a couple in the evening. Thanks again

If it's practical, you could let him sit on the table while you eat breakfast and dinner on work days, and have some food of his own to nibble on. Eating together is quality social time from a bird's point of view.
