Hey everyone i'm back. My budgies are totally in love lol. They're both doing fine. The guy at the pet store where I got Amarilllo says he doesn't remember what he is split with. I think he does because he was acting weird about it. I think he believes i'm trying to breed them to sell because I've bred lizards and stuff for him in the past. He's actually doing the same thing I am because he has a pied and a lutino in a cage together. Has anyone ever seen a gray budgie? He has this budgie there that is a real light gray almost white with normal eyes. It hurt it's foot so he won't sell it but it's beautiful. I asked him if it would be best just to cut the leg off where it broke. Anyone happen to have on opinion on whether a bird can live with one leg? I still didn't get my sister's lovebird i'm going to wait till it gets a bit warmer. But everyone have a good day gotta finish making dinner lol.

Welcome back!

Yes, there is a grey mutation in budgies. It removes all the structural color so you see the natural color of the melanin in the feather. It's basically the same as a normal cockatiel feather.

Birds can get along fine with just one leg, they learn how to compensate. But whether to amputate or not depends on whether the bird is in ongoing pain from the injury, and whether the leg is currently a help or a hindrance. Sometimes a bird can use an injured leg to help it move around, and other times it just gets in the way and the bird would be better off without it.

it can climb the cage fine but has trouble staying on a perch. It's a beautiful bird and I hope he does something to help it. I kinda think my lutino was split with blue because he has the other lutino he had when I bought mine in a cage with a ressessive pied right now. Is this maybe how he got the gray ones and are they hard to find?

Grey (aka greygreen) is a separate mutation that removes the structural color, but it looks best on a bird that is also blue because there's no yellow coloring to interfere with the appearance of the grey. I don't think they're very common but they aren't super rare either. There's more about them at http://cutelittlebirdiesaviary.weebly.c ... dgies.html

Thanks a lot. I'm looking to rescue one more bird. Found a rosy bourke on craigslist.

I've never had a bourke, but they're said to have sweet, peaceful personalities.

NO DONT get the budgies leg cut off...
not unless an avian vet recommends it...
I've a P'let who had 2 breaks in one leg...
she wasn't expected to survive the operation... but did... she get's around well, and has adapted
to her injury...
I've adapted her cage... and she is a happy contented bird...
this all took place nearly 5 and a half years ago.. she is still here today, and is nearly 6 now, so it is possible, with TLC....
