Once my two baby tiels get big enough, I am going to sell them. I already have someone interested in one. How should I sell the other one? I would do it on here, but seeing this is such a small forum, I doubt there would be anyone living close enough to get interested. ( I live in illinois) . I want my baby to go to a nice home,.......any ideas? By the way, how old should they be when I sell them?

You can put the chick on Craigslist and ask as many questions as you would like to the potential buyer. So, you can make sure that the owner will give the chick a nice, wonderful home.
You can also ask them to give you updates and, that you will get the chick back if they don't want him anymore.

The minimum age you can sell a chick is once they are weaned. Please don't sell them unweaned, even the most experienced hand feeder can aspirate a chick. It has happened to me.

Good luck on finding a new home

Hannah, I sold my four babies a few months ago, I am in the UK but I think what I am about to say is a good way everywhere in the world.
You advertise them on Craigslist and/or similar website; there are some dedicated to pets.

If you want to be reasonably sure that they go to a good home you need to ask for the maximum (reasonable) price: that itself will get rid of many unscrupulous people only looking for cheap breeders or birds that they are gonna resell to a higher price.
In the advert you need to convey the sense that they are family pet, tame etc.

As Baruch said, when you speak to potential buyers you ask as much as you can, so that you can be sure that they go to a proper family and not to a dealer. As a condition you should ask for regular updates and that the chick be returned to you if the new owners change their minds.

Following these lines I was able to sell three of them to very good people.
There are other forum members who have more experience than me on the subject so I am sure you will get more suggestions soon.

They should be ten-twelve weeks old, if I remember correctly.
You may find this interesting, it's about selling your chicks

Are there any bird clubs in your area? Bird clubs often host bird marts where birds can be sold. If you're in the Chicago area, the Greater Chicago Cage Bird Club is having a bird mart on April 5. http://www.gccbc.org/ Their "about" page says they have two bird marts a year, one in the spring and one in the fall.

In a bird mart you have less possibility to make sure that the buyer is a good carer and not a dealer

There are other bird clubs out there. This link has info on clubs in Illinois, Missouri and elsewhere: http://www.birdchannel.com/bird-communi ... sting.aspx Not all the info might be correct of course, some of these clubs might be defunct and there might be other clubs that aren't on the list. But if you google for pet bird clubs or bird marts in your area, you'll get an idea of what's out there. If you contacted the Chicago club, they might be able to tell you about other clubs that are closer to home.

Thank God Riley and Bailey aren't a bonded pair. There's no way they'd have chicks and there's no way I would even allow them to if they wanted to have them.

I wouldn't want to be responsible for selling chicks because not everyone has the best intentions when acquiring a pet. Case in point:

When I was a baby, our German Shepherd (this was the breed I grew up with prior to adopting our papillon) Princess had a litter of 8 puppies. We ended up keeping one, Queenie, and selling the other puppies. My grandmother was able to follow up with the vast majority of the puppies and learned that most of them ended up tragically. One of them eventually got loose. It was hit by a car and died at an early age. The others were either abused or neglected. It really broke my grandmother's heart so every dog and cat that came into the house after that was either spayed or neutered – NO EXCEPTIONS!

Nor does everyone who no longer wants a pet return it from whomever they acquired it from. Case in point:

The lady who runs a local Shih Tzu rescue went to follow up on one of the dogs she placed several years ago only to find out the woman she adopted it to no longer had it. The Shih Tzu ended up being sold on craigslist when the rescue made it quite clear at the time of adoption she was supposed to return the dog to rescue if she could no longer keep it (it was even spelled out in the written contract). It's because of this incident that the rescue is now a lot more careful who they adopt to by forcing them to ask even more questions of potential adopters and put potential adopters through even more hoops just to adopt.

Jan, the lady who fostered our papillon Gizmo, used to breed Irish Setters and Shelties. I'm not sure how many litters she had between the 2 breeds, but she said she had a total of 23 puppies between them and she was making it her personal mission to rescue and help place 23 dogs who were abandoned, abused or neglected and needed new homes. She was rescuing one dog for each puppy she produced as a breeder.

Honestly, rescues, including bird rescues have it hard as it is when it comes to screening homes and placing animals and they do it 7 days a week year after year.

If it was me selling chicks and I eventually found out that most of the birds I ended up selling to people I thought had good intentions and that were going to good homes ended up poorly, then there's no way I could ever live with myself knowing I sold a chick to someone who ended up abandoning, abusing or neglecting it later on down the road or for the rest of its life and I'd be furious if I told someone to return the bird to me at any time if they could no longer keep it and ended up turning around and pawning it off Craigslist only to make a fast buck rather than returning it to me.

There's just no way I could ever do something like this.

I'm of the mindset that when it comes to selling puppies, kittens, chicks etc..., it really should be left to the breeders. The reputable ones.
