Riley was acquired from the now defunct Petfinder Classifieds from a married coupled who ran a professional photography studio out of their home. They had an older female and wanted a companion for her so they got him from a bird breeder hoping he was going to be female. Shortly after they got him, their female passed away and it was becoming more apparent that the she they had hoped for was actually a he so they decided to re-home him. They claimed Riley was too loud and distracting. They initially wanted well over $100 for him and everything that came a long with him, but I wasn't going to pay that much for the tiel they no longer wanted so I talked them down to $95. I got him, his cage, his toys, his food, and nail clippers. He was a shabby bird when I acquired him. He had broken feathers on top of it. With the right diet, attention and TLC he blossomed into a handsome bird.

Bailey came from a local bird breeder up in Kenosha, WI. I acquired her just after she had been weaned. It was the day after Easter when I drove up to get her and bring her home. I had her paid for several weeks in advance. I paid $75 for her. I always wanted a pearl tiel so it worked out well for me going through a breeder. I initially wanted a male but Bailey ended up being a she instead of a he and that's okay. Female pearls are so much prettier than males since they retain their pearl markings.

Anyhow, that's the story behind my tiels.

What are the stories behind your tiels and other little feathered buddies? I'm curious as to how everyone else here acquired their birds.

Wow Jan I didn't know that! Who could do such a thing!

mines are a mixed bunch: two come from a breeder. Two I got from a pet shop because they were too miserable to be left there. Three are rescues. One is from a person who put an advert on Gumtree.

Let's see... Vlad came from a pet shop. Shodu, Mims, and Priscilla were bought direct from different breeders. I won Buster at the bird club monthly raffle. Pip, Ladybug, Elvis, and Azazel were rehomes, all at the same time from the same person. And Teela, Squeebis, Snowy and Henry are homegrown!

Someone did it and that person isn't the only one. We live in a very disposable society and pets aren't immune to it.

I bought some extra tickets that day to improve my chances. I brought Shodu to the meeting that day and they were shrieking back and forth at each other, so I figured it was love at first sight and I'd better try to get him. Most of the time at the bird club raffle I don't start winning until all the stuff I want is gone. But every now and then I get on a hot streak.

Best raffle ever.

I adopted Beaker from a newspaper ad, got Jaid from my bird shop in a bin of handfed tiels, I bought Beck from a PetSmart and got Poppy from a hoarder's house.

Piper, Snowy and Emma all came from Pet Supplies Plus, which is near where I live.

Silver came from a specialty bird store, Bird Jungle, which has hand fed baby cockatiels (in a bin!).

A little off the subject, but speaking of rescues, my cat Adele I got from a rescue. The card on her cage said she had been left on the street a year before, with the comment "Who could do such a thing to this sweet girl." My heart melted, and I took her home. I've felt, from the first day, that she's really happy to have a real home.
