Hi All
Do any of you have any brilliant ideas about keeping the dust and dander at bay from our dear 'tiels??? My husband and I both cough a LOT more since Peach came to live with us. It will get much better when and if summer ever arrives in this North Country we live in and we can all be outside again but meanwhile....any input would be welcome.

Lots of baths for her and maybe get an air purifier.

I'm afraid to let her get wet because it has been so cold here. Do you use an air purifier? Do they work well?

Do you have a warm spot or sunny window she would like to sit while she dried off? Honestly, even though Coyote doesn't like his baths (and therefore doesn't fluff out his feathers and spread out his wings and just sits there like a lump), I do eventually get through the waterproof layer to get him a good rinse with the shower. I usually do it at a time of day where the sun is coming through the window by his cage so he can snooze in the sunshine while drying off.

If I go more than two weeks without showering him, the dust he leaves everywhere is just astonishing... well to me, being my first cockatiel and all. I suppose they're all this dusty, it's just amazing how much dust he drops off just hanging out on my shoulder and I try to bathe him once a week because the dust bothers my allergies too.

No, I don't use one. I was just suggesting it. For some reason, 2 dusty tiels don't bother me much. I give them a soaking in the shower though every Monday, except during the winter. Only if it's a warm day in the winter. I go for late morning, early afternoon for them, so they have hours to dry off in the sun.

Well...I took your advice and Peach took a shower with me this morning. She loved it. She was preening and turning herself inside out to get all body parts wet! She hasn't had a shower since late fall.
Her cage is in the full sun from mid afternoon until sundown so it all worked out very well. Peach says thanks everybody! :thanks:

True HEPA air purifiers are awesome. You should see how much tiel dust I vacuum off the pre-filter.
