Do you have special events for your birds?
Tonight we had a special event where the budgie cage and the cockatiel cage were open, and they got to climb all over each others' cage and taste each others' food.
I find birds seem to love routine, but I think it's also nice to insert something unusual into their day once in a while.

So far nothing special has really happened (aside from the treatment Lucy got after I got her back from being lost for almost a week), but Lucy's hatchday is coming up. I might try and do something special for her.

However, it's the same exact day that my birthday happens to be on, so it will be interesting. Having her out while having people over might be a disaster. She isn't quite socialized to strangers, so it would really freak her out.

You can't buy them but you can take the seeds out of fresh cantaloupe and dry them.

I had to google that

As my bird's feathers are still trimmed, I sometimes take them outside to the park. They seem to really enjoy it. You might think it's dangerous because they might fly away, but I do something to every bird I get; as soon as I trim their wings, I take them outside and show them they can't fly or get away. This way, they won't try it again because they know I trust them and because they can't actually get away.

But, yeah. It's a fun special event I do almost every week.

My experience with cockatiels is that they NEVER stop trying to fly. They're strong flyers too, and sometimes all it takes is one new feather or the wind blowing in the right direction for them to be able to fly a lot farther than you'd expect. So it's risky to take them out like this. If you keep on doing it, at least make sure to only do it on days when there's no wind.

Lucy's wings were actually clipped when she flew away. She flew almost to the very top of this one tall pine tree, and then somewhere else. She ended up still in the same neighborhood, but managed to get pretty far from the house.

I was lucky enough to actually get her back, too. Not a lot of birds end up being found by someone, let alone being returned to their owners.

Craziest part was that it wasn't even windy that day. She managed to get into that tree through sheer determination.

So birds are capable of flying great distances if they're determined enough to do so, and if their wings are strong enough. In these situations, literally anything could happen.
