Perhaps have the pet sitter come over and change out the cage, but you be elsewhere in the house, to see if it would work out.
Dianne, that actually works, but the human has to be out of the place completely in my experience. When I birdsit, a bunch of unruly marauders (adorable still), it takes a while for them to register that their daddy (fave human) isn't in the house anymore. At that point they calm down and (usually) accept cure, cage cleaning, even cuddles. But if owner is in next room.... They can hear everything!!!!!
