Last evening, I was trying to put the seed containers into the cages. Silver kept beaking me.

(beaking means he has his beak wide open and bops my hand with it. He doesn’t actually bite) Is there a word for this behavior other than beaking, which I think I made up?

I felt Silver was being kind of bratty. So, I started circling my finger around him, just out of his reach. He kept trying to get at it, but couldn’t quite reach it. Then, he bowed his head, which is what he does when he wants me to scratch his head. However, when I reached out to touch his head, he raised it up and beaked my hand. He did that several times.

I think he knew I was teasing him, and decided to tease me back. I thought it was pretty smart of him.

I noticed that Silver seemed to be doing quite a bit of crop adjusting on my finger this afternoon. Then, I remembered that he did it yesterday too.

So, I imitated the movement. We went back and forth like that for quite a while. He seemed to be really enjoying it. It seemed to me that it wasn't to do with needing to adjust his crop. I thought about our mouths and how flexible they are to express a wide range of emotions. A bird's beak, in contrast, is quite rigid. By showing me his tongue waving around, I thought he might be imitating me.

I thought all of a sudden, there was another level of communication between us. I mean, I don't want to go overboard on this, but it was so interesting.

I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one making words up lol, beaking sounds very good! Sam does that a lot, Charlie too and he's quite comical because he shakes his head to add drama to it :D
