As far as I know it's only been studied with budgies. But it probably applies to a lot of birds that fly in large flocks. I would guess that this is something that developed early in the evolution of flying bird flocks, so it's likely that a lot of different species have the same ancestor and use the same technique.

Have you seen the way starlings coordinate their flight pattern? This behavior is called a murmuration.

Come to think of it, there are some types of fish that travel in huge schools and turn at the same time like they're reading each other's minds. Fish are the oldest vertebrates - reptiles descended from fish, and birds descended from reptiles. So maybe this coordinated traveling behavior is older than birds, and was actually passed down from their ancient fishy ancestors.
