Not sure if this is a behavior I just live with, or I must stop. Cashew is my latest addition to my single lovebird, Cheerio. I put them together and they got along very well, maybe even too well. Cheerio regurgitates to Cashew multiple times a day. Cashew does the full baby response. He can eat seeds and pellets, but he’s starting to rely on Cheerio for food. Cashew eats so much, that his crop looks like it’s about to explode. Do you think I should seperate them until Cashew is fully dependent on eating on his own? Or should I just let them be birds together?

I’ve tried separating Cashew from Cheerio, but Cashew was just pacing back and fourth to get out. If I know separating them is the right choice, I won’t care if he paces.

How far is Cashew from being weaned? I don't know whether Cheerio's behavior is fatherly or if he doesn't realize Cashew is a baby and is courting him/her.

Since there are so many uncertainties, my suggestion would be to keep them apart some of the time, and let them be together some of the time. This will give Cashew the opportunity to learn to feed himself, but it will also let them work on their social interactions while you try to figure out exactly what's going on between them.

Cashew IS weened! That’s what bothers me. It’s like Cashew is reverting to a baby. I too am confused if Cheerio is trying to father, or mate him.

I separated them in different rooms. This eliminated the pacing. I feel like I’m going to keep them separated until Cashew has gone through his first molt.

You might want to let them meet occasionally, just to keep them socialized with each other. But you definitely don't want any mating, if that's what Cheerio has on his mind.
