My friend is looking into getting an Indian Ringneck parakeet. He already has two budgies, and he wants a bird that will bond to him more closely. Anyone know anything about them? He has already considered green cheek conures and lovebirds. I wish he would consider a cockatiel though. Not sure why he wants a ringneck now but I’m willing to help him decide if they’re the right bird for him. How do IRNs compare with cockatiels, green cheeks, lovebirds, etc. ? :alex:

IRNs are a fairly challenging species: https://www.beautyofbirds.com/ringneckp ... spets.html

I can't speak for all the small parrot species, but I know that in general it's easier to form a bond with a cockatiel than a ringneck. Not every cockatiel will bond of course, but the chances are pretty good if you get a handfed baby that's been handled a lot.

I agree. I’ve never had a ring neck, but I’ve had cocktiels, a sun conure, and lovebirds and they were all friendly. I feel like IRN are a bigger, chattier, version of a budgie, or grass parakeet. I’ve seen some cuddly ones, but I don’t think it’s the majority of them. I lucked out with Cheerio. He lets me flip him on his back, and scratch his head. He also likes to “sit” on my hand and Id carry him like a baby. Not all lovebirds are like that, but I got Cheerio before he was weened.

Thanks guys! I will show the link to my friend. I would definitely recommend that he get a cockatiel, conure, or lovebird instead of an IRN. I don’t think he would be ready for a ringneck since he’s only had budgies.

Also, Feathers, your lovebird sounds amazing. I really want a lovebird now!
