Three on the way - do you have eggs? It's getting so busy here that I'm losing track of whose birds are nesting.

Yes, i do. One of them is pipping! I'm soooooo excited! I don't have a wood chips for nesting, and dont have access to them. Im scared the chicks are going to get splayed legs! I cut up toilet paper into lots of small pieces, is that an ok substitute? Please help! :feedback:

A paper towel in its whole piece would work better. A textured one even more so.

To prevent splay leg you need a surface that is soft not hard, and also is not slippery or unstable so the chicks' feet don't slide out from under them whenever they move. You can test the material you have in the nest now to see if it meets these criteria. With wood shavings, the father can make a bowl shape in the bedding that holds its shape pretty well. If your current material can do this it will probably work. If it shifts around at the slightest touch the babies won't be able to control their footing, and you'll need to find something that works better.
