So he basically wants a love triangle, where only the parakeets make babies, and he tries to raise them.

Either that, or he plays the roll of the weird uncle that the kids love, and the parents only tolerate his pressence.

Most cockatiels don't want anyone helping them raise their chicks, but there are some who will readily form a threesome or even a foursome and raise babies as a group. I've got a threesome (Vlad, Snowy and Mims), and for a brief time I had a foursome (Ladybug and her male harem of Pip, Elvis and Azazel). Ladybug subsequently decided that Pip was her one true love and dumped the others.

My guess is that this tolerance is beneficial in the wild because unmated birds who otherwise wouldn't be doing anything productive are put to work gathering food for babies. If you've got two cocks and a hen, you have three adults gathering food instead of just two, which means more food for the chicks and less stress on the adults.

But if you have two hens and one cock, and he mated with both hens, you've got three adults gathering food for the babies instead of four, which isn't so good. But if there's a lot of food available, there might still be more chicks surviving than there would have been with just a single pair.

I have a female cockatiel that was in love with my male budgie. They mated every day! The female cockatiel ignored the male cockatiel. Ultimately, I separated the cockatiel from the budgie.

The male budgie does not mate with the female budgie he shares a cage with, and the male cockatiel doesn't mate with the female cockatiel. Go figure!

Wow! I doubt these species can have babies, but, ¿Can they?

If they can't, then sorry for my ignorance!!

Also, just briefly, I would like to know what the frase: "Go figure!" means...

No, budgies and cockatiels can't. But, there has been this thing around called a galahtiel. It's supposedly a mix of cockatiel and cockatoo, but personally I'm still not sure it's real. I honestly think it's just Photoshop work.

However, anything is possible.

"Go figure" just means it's strange and absurd but happened the way it did... I think.

The galatiel appears to be real. This website has a link to a video (which takes quite a while to open): http://talkingbirds.com.au/world-firsts/galatiel-php/

The video is also on youtube but the quality is a lot worse than the other version:

GOODNESS! How'd that happen!? Stephanie, guess you should keep trying with your budgies and cockatiels! Imagine creating the very first: "budgatiel" or "cockadgie"! That'd be AWESOME! And imagine the price you would sell it for!! Jk. I know it's impossible now because they're from different family members. Like cockatiels to the cockatoo family and budgies to the... Umm... Budgageriar family? Dunno!

The relationship of budgies to other species is kind of weird. There's a phylogeny (family tree) for the parrots at http://jboyd.net/Taxo/Psittaciformes.pdf It's all the Latin scientific names not the English names to make it harder to use lol. If you go to the bottom of the second page, the budgies (Melopsittacus) are in with the Loriini - yes that's the lories, budgies are related more closely to them than to most of the Australian grass parakeets. The closest relative to the Loriini is the Agapornithini - African lovebirds!! Budgies are more closely related to lovebirds than to a lot of Australian species. They're far, far removed from cockatiels who are in the Cactuidae (Nymphicus).

Several of the grass parakeets are Neophema, in the Pezoporini. Dweezil is Polytelis, up in the Psittaculini. Budgies are a LOT more closely related to lovebirds and lories than they are to princess parrots, and a lot more closely related to POWs than they are to cockatiels.

Cockatoos and Cockatiels are biologically related, so it is possible. You just have a galah and cockatiel fall in love, and nature will do it's work. But with cockatiels and budgies, it wouldn't work, because they're not biologically related. It's kind of like crossing a wolf with domestic dog. They're different species, but it happens, since they're related.

Though some of the "Galatiel" pictures you see on google, are actually galahs crossed with another similar-sized cockatoo species.

For whatever reason, Galah hybrids usually seem to have a cockatiel-like coloring to them.

It also seems common for cockatoos in general to crave a forbidden love.
