Carolyn will know this without looking at the genetic calculator. But I'll have to see what I can get out of the two hens with pumba as dad.

The three birds in the cardboard nestbox are your birds, aren't they? Dad is whiteface and one of the hens is whiteface, so all the babies from that pair will be whiteface too. The pearl hen is not whiteface, so any chicks that are not whiteface will definitely be her children.

The big question is whether the pearl hen is split to whiteface or not. If she is, then it's expected that half of her babies will be whiteface. But this is a statistical average, not something that's guaranteed to happen in every clutch. We also don't know how many eggs each hen laid - maybe each one laid five eggs, or maybe it was six and four or some other number.

If you get 7 or 8 whiteface babies and two non-whiteface, there's a high probability that the pearl hen is split whiteface and you can't be too sure about which hen is the mother of a specific whiteface chick. If you get five whiteface and five non-whiteface, it seems likely that she is not split and you can easily tell which chick came from which mother. If you get six whiteface and four non-WF it's a lot more uncertain.

Whiteface chicks can be identified as soon as they hatch because they have white down. Non-whiteface chicks have yellow down.

Looks like three is all I'm going to get... I took a picture and it clearly shows 2 of them are Babbel's (the pearl hen). I'm pretty sure the 3rd one is aswell...

PS on a side note, I'm starting to get annoyed with photobucket because of all the comercials. Is there any other way to put up pictures here? I have dropbox and googlepics, but can't find a way to put up direct links.

If any of the pearl chicks are boys then the pearl hen is definitely the mother. But if they're girls, then any hen could be the mother! Pearl is a sex-linked mutation, and the inheritance rules are different for girls and boys. Girls get the gene only from their father (it doesn't pass from mother to daughter), and if they get it from him they will be visual pearl. Boys have to get the gene from both parents to be visual pearl.

Pumba obviously has the pearl gene. To get visual pearl chicks you MUST have a father with the pearl gene. If he doesn't have it you won't get any pearl chicks at all, even if the mother is visual pearl.

Pumba is indeed whiteface split to pearl. Don't know how you guessed/saw it way back when I first adopted them. But thanks to your help I had put him down as Whitface split to pearl.

Seeing all chicks are pearl, (at least that's what it looks like) I'm only going te be sure Babbel is the mother of the boys then... I really need to get a book on mendel's theory. I always forget this stuff... Thx Caro

EDIT: I have Babbel down as pearl split to whiteface. Can I be sure that's correct?

If I remember right, she's a visual pearl. If she's the mother of any whiteface chicks then she's definitely split to WF - both parents have to have the gene to get chicks who are visual whiteface.

Pearl is a sex-linked mutation which is a more complicated subject than Mendel's pea plants. I have an explanation here if you want to read something that makes everybody's head spin the first time they read it: http://www.littlefeatheredbuddies.com/i ... inked.html But if you read it often enough it starts to make sense after a while.

Thanks for putting that up again... I knew I read it once after you put it up in the past but couldn't find the apropriate thread anymore! You're the best, hope you survive some more Vlad-attacks!

It's gotten to the point that I instinctively act like a turtle when I get near the nestbox, and try to pull my neck down into my shoulders. It works pretty well too - Vlad ends up banging on my skull with his beak without being able to get hold of any tender flesh.

Go for the ears Vlad! The EARS!! Make her feel your pain!! Home invasions without a warrant are a valid reason for vengeance! (in my book)

Unfortunately he DOES know that he can always go for the ears if his first plan of attack doesn't work out. But it usually takes him a while to remember it, and sometimes I can get him safely locked away before he starts gnawing on them. He's a holy terror when he's got a nest to defend.
