Really. I could've sworn I did it to him. I guess that makes me feel a little better then. At least he had his favorite treat before he left me. That actually brings me quite a bit of closure.
Again Hannah, sorry for your loss.

That's a lovely way to look at it Stephanie. He did get to have his favorite treat.

For the sand, look for some nice clean sand that doesn't have any obvious crud in it. Rinse it off - it might be helpful to pour the water through a paper towel at the end because the towel will catch the sand and let the water pass through. Spread the sand in a thin layer and put it out in the sun to dry - the UV rays in the sun will kill any germs that are still there. Then provide a small amount in a place where Griffin can get to it. It might be in a small dish or sprinkled on a flat surface. Keep the amount small, about as much as you can pinch between your thumb and forefinger. Hopefully he will go for it.

Thank you. What happens if other birds eat it?

You can purchase packets of bird grit from the stores.... nothing will happen if the other birds eat it... my tiel has some now and again...

Thanks Jan. I'll buy it from a store because I don't want to risk bacteria.

Jan is right, it's OK for your other birds, but keep the quantity small to be on the safe side. There's a widespread belief that excessive grit can cause crop impaction. I think there's good reason to believe that this is incorrect but I can't be 100% sure of it. Cockatiels eat grit in the wild, it's part of their natural diet, so they're designed by nature to deal with grit.
You can buy boxes that mostly contain clean sand and are usually called bird gravel or something like that. There are fancier types too. Kaytee has a nice Hi-Cal grit that has both soluble and insoluble grit in it. The soluble grit dissolves in the body and provides minerals like calcium, and the insoluble grit does NOT dissolve and provides extra grinding power in the gizzard. Higgins Snack Attack seems to be all soluble grit so that's not a good choice for this particular problem. You need to have at least some insoluble grit in the mix.

Thank you so much! I never actually knew what grit was until this thread. I thought it was like a mineral block or something like that.

Mineral block isn't exactly grit but it serves the same general purpose as soluble grit. The word "grit" really refers to small hard particles of rock or other material.
