How strange life is, I just came back to the forum and I am already posting a Memorial. I am grateful for that, otherwise there wouldn't be anything written about my boy anywhere.

Last night at about 8pm my sweet little Burt passed away. I found his tiny body on the bottom of his cage when I was looking for him at bedtime, and his body was still warm.

He was a rescue bird who spent years being abused, and that's why he was a plucker. We both worked on that and finally he was starting to let a few feathers grow. His life was full of excitement and he had less time to think about his obsession.

When he came to me with his companion Charlie/Hamish, they were both cage bound but lately they both enjoyed to fly around and socialise.

He had many names, they all reflect parts of his life and personality: first he was Buster, then we renamed him Dougal, and lately he was Burt Reynolds to celebrate the change in his appearance: he was slowly regrowing some of his feathers, especially on the chest :)

After consulting with the vet about the type of life he was fit enough to live, we both agreed that letting him learn again to fly and be a bird was better than keeping him locked in a cage, even though that meant that he would probably live a shorter life. He had breathing problems sometimes, and didn't see very well. I think he was an older bird.

He was so brave and sweet, always friendly with everyone and ready for a life full of adventure. I am devastated by his loss but also proud of having been able to give him a second chance and happiness.

Here we are, sweetheart, celebrating you and your life.
We all will miss you and your unbreakable spirit, your goofiness and songs, I hope you have already met your brothers George and Yoghi at the Rainbow Bridge.

I will never forget you, goodnight sweetheart, fly free now, love forever.

My heart cracked when I read this. I don't know what to say. This happened so sudden. He had an amazing life with you. He even stopped plucking his chest. That is amazing. He might have passed away but at least you can take comfort in knowing that he passed with an amazing life. If you ever need to speak to someone, I'm right here in pm.

That's so sad and I'm sorry you lost him. He had to wait a long time to start having a wonderful life but he did have it with you, and he ended his life as a happy bird.

I'm sorry you lost him Barbara. You said he was adventurous and now his adventures continue. He was a beautiful boy and always will be. I'm sure he's up there playing with my Jail Bird and Teak.

It is unfortunate that he died. He lived a great life with you. With a past like his, he was taught to fear humans, and you showed him otherwise. That is the best thing you can possibly do with a bird like him.

May he rest in peace.
