Here's how I would do it: find someone who has eggs now or expects to have them soon. Hang up the nestbox, let the boys have some time to explore, then put some fake or infertile eggs in it. If they do a good job with the fakes you can give them one or two real eggs to take care of. If they don't do a good job with the fakes then don't give them any real eggs!

Great idea! I will use the dummy eggs, thank you I didn't think of it. Those eggs didn't fool Trilly but they might work with inexperienced boys.

Are my bird the only ones that don't seem to get hormonal?

My cockatiels are hormonal right now. They keep fighting all the time. Grr, so annoying.

I'm able to keep Coyote on long nights so I'm good over here. The budgies are acting crazy though, although I don't have much to worry about, what with Cloud's affair with the cage going on. Waffles just sings and head bobs to whatever, cilantro, the mineral block, a cage bar, the air and so on.

The air.
Specky does that too. He has a plastic budgie head toy that bobs when he touches it.

My boys will sing to the nestboxes when I first put them up. Sometimes when their favorite hen isn't nearby they'll sing to the nearest bird, who is frequently male and often seems to appreciate the attention more than the hens do. It's hilarious.
