Chipper, I know what you mean and join in the confusion
It's quite frustrating sometimes.
Italian language is very specific on gender, to the point where we don't even have the neutral gender "it" and everything is either male or female (articles, nouns, adjectives), so if I say even the simplest phrase like "I am tired" or "I am the best cook in the world", I will give away my gender.
The biggest problem with English is that adjectives and articles have no gender so the chance to easily identify the sex of a person is very slim.
