She might want to have babies in the trash can. But since you've found her there twice, she may have realized that it's not safe and secure there, and will give up on the idea.

Do you throw any food waste in this trash can? If you do, then another possibility is that she's looking for food there.
ок, the basket has what I sweep when I sweep: rabbit poop, some aspen shavings that end up outside their litter boxes (I guess she might want them as nest material but I am not sure if mice carries stuff to the location of their nests... rabbits do though - they carry grass in their mouth - and mouse is kind of close relative to them, aren't they?), and some leftovers veggies (usually dry by the time they are swept)
The basket gets emptied every few days.

She might be going after the dried vegetables. A trash can with a lid might help discourage the mice from taking up residence in your garage.

leftovers veggies are also on the rabbit's rug after they spend a night (I don't put them right on the rug of course but some fall out of the flat box top where they are served on the rug). Usually I only take care of it when it's time to bring rabbits inside in the evening so I sweep all trash that was made during previous night. I have enough work during the day...
But we will see.

I wonder what's wrong with this mice. They must be mutants with no smelling ability. I see them walking all around the traps but never go inside...

Finally got her in the live trap! She was HUGE (compared to anybody I have seen this season so far). Released her in the wild park. I hope I won't see her little kids suffering without mom (if she has any left on my premises)

Well done Chipper! Problem eliminated from the root! Now let's pray that the little ones won't make it to new mamas and daddies, and you can forget about the whole business :)

Can't help but imagine the stronger ones eating away at the weaker ones that died of famine. Reaching adulthood and breeding all over again!

Sorry, not to discourage anybody... It's just an image in my (sick) mind of a never ending story.

the joy was premature. The next day I opened the garage door and saw them again. More mice or at least one. Caught that one too. It wasn't huge but of a decent size. I release them all at the same spot in the park. Hopefully they can reunite LOL
It seems to be quiet since that. I will keep watching.
The total is: one died at the front. 2 juveniles caught themselves in the waste basket. And two grownups got caught in the live trap.

Chipper, if you are dropping them all in the same spot you could move the little ones as well!!! They will find each other again especially if you make like a burrow, not sure it's the right English word, like a refuge, with some wood and leaves... Just an idea, don't know if it's doable for you.

I hope you are dropping them FAR, FAR AWAY like father Ted would say lol
