Brass tubas are obviously heavy metal (the heaviest ones are about 35 pounds) but French horns aren't too far behind, with the heaviest ones around 30 pounds. Tubas are mostly used for going oompah, and when there's an interesting bit of melody to play you're a lot more likely to hear a French horn doing it than a tuba. When a composer wants to add a nice haunting dark touch to the music, the French horns do the job nicely.

Stephanie, are there any particular songs from Disturbed that you recommend?

I don't mind Open Your Eyes. That's the only one coming to mind at the moment. Maybe later I'll remember that other one...

It's hilarious that somebody did a death metal cover of a song from a Disney film for little girls. I hadn't even heard of the song before, but I looked up the original version from the movie so I'd have something to compare the cover to.

I think this is the same recording that B posted, but the video is of the band performing the song not the film. It's even funnier this way, knowing the origins of the song and watching these grungy guys bang their heads to it:

I found an instrumental metal cover of it. This is the best version I've heard:

I found a My Little Pony cover too. Apparently everybody's getting in on it. My nephew who's in the Air Force is a Brony BTW:

I see you did your research on "Frozen." Did you ever watch the movie? I did, and it was really good!

The death metal covers are hilarious! I think the one with the clip of the original video with metal as the audio is funnier.

Also...My Little Pony?? Oh please no. Is your nephew from the AIR FORCE really a brony????? I can't wrap my head around that.

I've never seen the movie, but the merchandise related to it is EVERYWHERE. If I notice it being shown on TV for free someday I'll watch it.

I suddenly realized that the heaviest-metal classical instrument isn't a tuba or a French horn. It's a freaking PIPE ORGAN!!!

This is just a picture:

The first time I ever heard the passacaglia it was a free live performance that I basically wandered into in this room, circa 1973:

Smith Music Hall at the University of Illinois. I didn't even know what a passacaglia was, but I was transfixed.

That's a fascinating instrument. I also like that room in the last picture. Very nice.

How's your orchestra doing? Are you still in it?
