Why do birds like to swing?

Now, to answer your original question, I suppose they just like the motion of it.

But. Why? I mean. Doesn't it make them nauseous? It's like a roller coasters.

In the wild they have to sit on tree branches that sway in the wind. Sitting on a swing would be similar.

All of my birds like to sit on a swing, especially at night.

However, they don't do anything active to initiate a swinging motion. And, I notice that if I swing any of them, like when they are on my hand, they will usually leave.

Perhaps it's that a swing is usually the highest place to perch.

On the other hand, I have a swing suspended from a light fixture so it's about two inches above the top of the cage. They have never once gone onto that swing. And, it is identical to a swing inside of the cage that they use quite a bit.

Actually I remember hearing from somewhere that some birds like the "enclosed" kind of swings. My budgies do. Like the kind with the wire above them? Or you know something similar. Like a security kind of thing.

Lately I've been putting up perches on electrical wiring. Basically they're swings. But as there are many in my aviary, I can't really tell if they prefer the swings over more sturdy perches...
