I have one sun conure. I don't really speak to him/her. There isn't a single name I like out there and even if I do. It doesn't fit. Why can't I just call him 'Sun Conure'? Does it have to be a name??? I'm so tired of trying to find a name. Even when I do, nobody likes it. I don't even know if it's a boy or girl and I don't like unisex names. Why can't I just call him 'bird'? I'm frustrated because everyone has a name for their bird but mine because I suck at naming things.

Some people use bird as a actual name and it dosent matter if someone dosent like it its your bird and your choice.

If you don't want to name your conure, you don't have to. However, I just cannot resist suggesting Sunny.

Maybe I should just name him Sunny. Is it unisex? That was the first name I liked for him. I think it suits him. I don't really care how common it is. If it's common that probably means it's a very good name for them. I'm going to see if Sunny fits. Wish me luck.

No fair, I was going to suggest Sunny but Dianne beat me to it! It's a unisex name, and it sounds more like a real name than "Sun Conure" or "Bird" does.

One of the pet shops here had an Amazon parrot named Birdo who was a store pet (not for sale). That's a good name too. I used to go in there sometimes just to visit him, and then I felt obligated to buy something before I left the store lol. He passed away a few years ago at the age of 95, and going to that store just isn't as much fun any more.

actually a lot of my birds don't have names (just nicknames) but this is from having very busy life and having no good chance to stop all activities and think about names.
As for nicknames, they all still have some kind of name that identifies them (cinnamons have names that originate from "Cinnamon"), and I do talk to my birds LOL
What is the reason you don't talk to your only bird? I am asking because talking is one of the most natural ways for humans to express themselves.

Well I do talk to him when we cuddle. But I don't have conversations with him. I don't call him by his name either. He is a bird. He won't understand me so it's pretty pointless in my opinion.

My birds certainly know when I address them by the name. But it's up to you of course.

My mam has conversations with Tiko and she talks back and she makes up her own sentences. And my birds know their names.

Actually, parrots have a better understanding of human speech than we think. They can not only learn words, but they can learn how to use them in context, so they actually understand the words they pick up. While they may not have the same vocabulary range as we do, they are able to understand.

Also, parrots are actually able to learn their names, just like how dogs may learn their names, and you can use that for more advanced flight recall, where they will fly to you when you call them. While they're better with visual commands, they can understand verbal commands quite well when trained enough. When in the wild, parrots actually have certain "names" which is a certain series of calls. They learn it from their parents, and their siblings, and they know who talks to who in the flock. I think we just have the tendency to give them human names as pets, since it's easier to pronounce.

But some people don't name their birds, so you don't really have to. I guess it just gives a sense of identification for most owners.
