Do Parrotlets get along good with cockatiels some people say parrotlets are aggressive and I dont believe that because I have a parrotlet with me now named chewie hes staying with me for the night Im teaching him a trick or two and hes very sweet and the cockatiels are ok with him.Casper and Casha just went home a while ago.

Parrotlets are very aggressive and have been known to kill cockatiels and other birds that were larger than themselves. An experienced parrotlet breeder told me that the only bird that should ever be kept in the same cage as a parrotlet is a compatible parrotlet of the opposite sex. Even same-sex parrotlets that seem to get along well will eventually end up having a fight to the death if you keep them in the same cage. There are exceptions to every rule and there's probably a parrotlet somewhere who could spend its life living in peace and harmony with a bird from a different species. But we don't have any way to identify that parrotlet, so don't risk it! If you get a parrotlet it should be kept in a different cage than the other birds, and supervised when they have out of cage play time together.

Another problem with parrotlet aggression is that they aren't afraid of bigger birds and will pick a fight with any bird, like a large macaw or cockatoo. This frequently results in the death of the parrotlet when the larger bird fights back. So parrotlet safety is a two-way street; you have to protect the other birds from the parrotlet, and you have to protect the parrotlet from the consequences of its own aggression.

I guess they couldn't do much to a tiel, since they're so small, but I guess it's what we've always been told: their personalities may vary. If the parrotlet is very calm, and the cockatiel too, I guess there wouldn't be too much of a big deal. But if they are fighty, then I think they could do some damage to each other, like picking on feet and eyes and stuff. Also, I've been told that how you introduce them is key. And if your flock doesn't accept them, than that could be frustrating.

Conclusions: Get one if you want to, but always have a spare cage just in case they don't get along, and introduce them well.

They would probably be alright with each other during out-of-cage time. I read somewhere that parrotlets somewhat have the behavior of an amazon parrot (a moderately large species), which probably explains why they're not afraid of a bird bigger than them. They practically have "little bird syndrome" (as opposed to "short-man's syndrome").

Erik, you're not completely wrong. The personalities will vary. Some may be more aggressive than others. Regardless, it's best to get them their own cage.

Here's a thread on a parrotlet forum where somebody asked about mixing cockatiels and parrotlets. The senior members say BE CAREFUL. http://www.talkparrotlets.com/showthread.php?t=7429

That's awesome! :) I'm sure in some cases, a parrotlet may get along with cockatiels, though if you were to buy one of the babies from the breeder, I doubt they would have the same personality as Chewie. Even hand reared babies can be aggressive.

So it would still be best to get a separate cage.

OK Guys............ I've had P'lets for years now...I have 3 to date...
You never never put a P'let in a cage with any other bird except a P'let......
They can only be kept in pairs... are very feisty... they will snap off another birds toe in a second...
They are not a flock bird.
Yes they look small, cuddly, soft, all a show... they will bite in a split second...
One of mine will take chunks out of me if she can...
My P'lets cages are covered before the budgies and tiel have out of cage time...
they have been known to take on a large parrot and win...
My advise never trust a P'let.
