It looks like Photobucket just became completely worthless. They don't allow linking any more unless you pay them a huge amount of money. The amount of time that it took to see anything had gotten really ridiculous anyway because they bombarded you with so much advertising. Does anybody have suggestions for a good alternative?

This link has a list of alternatives to Photobucket: http://www.topbestalternatives.com/photobucket/ I don't have experience with any of them. Personally I am experimenting with Tumblr. It's very different from Photobucket but I'm starting to get the hang of it.

I wish I knew which one was easiest and best! I'm using Tumblr, which definitely had a learning curve. So far I haven't found any recent online articles telling people what the best replacement is, but hopefully something will appear soon. This just happened a few days ago, and there will be a LOT of unhappy people who need this information.

It looks like Imgur might be a great alternative so I'm going to try it out. They say it became more popular than Photobucket several years ago. I have not been happy with Photobucket for a while now because it became ridiculously slow, so I'm not particularly sad that they forced me to go looking for something else.

Yeah photobucket used to be absolutely spot on for my forum photos, I loved it. It just started to become so slow it was unusable and then suddenly it was asking for money. I don't understand what could have possibly gone wrong or what made them think any of it was acceptable

Maybe they were so popular that they couldn't afford to keep it up any longer. It takes money to maintain the servers and storage space that they must have been using. If that's the case, they've solved their problem as far as I'm concerned, because I won't be taking up any more space on their server.

Imgur is looking wonderful so far. It's fast and it's free. I'm not sure how their Image Link code is supposed to work, since I don't see an image when I paste this code into a post and don't do anything else. The internet is indicating that this code might be for email and instant messaging.

But the combination of their Direct Link code plus image tags added by me works great. There's also a BBC Code box that looks like it has the image tags already built into it. I haven't tried to use that one yet.

People are saying good things about Flickr too. I haven't tried it, but it sounds like a good alternative to Photobucket. It seems like most people who've tried both like Imgur better though.

It's understandable that Photobucket might not be able to afford to do this for free any more, but the way they handled it was appalling and they've probably destroyed themselves by doing it. They went from free to $400 a year with no warning at all, and locked up a lot of the accounts so people can't even retrieve the pictures they stored there. Now they're hated by millions of people who used to like them, and it's not likely that very many of them will fork over the $400 when they can still get the same service for free in other places. Even if all the free services disappear, there are plenty of paid services that do the same thing for a lot less. $400 a year is vastly overpriced. Photobucket has alienated just about everybody who might have stuck around if they charged a more reasonable amount.
