I’m getting a second lovebird to accompany Cheerio. I’m a bit nervous because I've heard a lot about lovebirds and their territorial behavior. I knew what I signed up for when I got Cheerio, but I’m not really prepared. Cheerio has only known humans. He gets very active and interested when I play lovebird sounds online, but is that enough evidence that he’ll like this companion?

I found this gorgeous male orange face lovebird on Craigslist. I feel like I want to go for him, but I’m scared they’ll fight. I’ve always had great success introducing cockatiels together in an aviary, but 2 lovebirds in a cage? I’m nervous.

It seems safest to keep them in separate cages in the beginning at least. You'll be able to see how well they're getting along with each other, and decide later on whether it's appropriate to keep them in the same cage or not.

If you just move the new bird into Cheerio's cage, that's asking for trouble. Moving them into a new cage at the same time might work better. A new cage won't be anyone's territory yet.

Ok. I will do that. The birds not getting along is my main concern. If it goes well, we should be a happy trio. 2 male lovebirds housed together shouldn't be a problem, right?

I don't know much about lovebirds, but the internet is indicating that two males can live together peacefully. Apparently the females are more aggressive than the males in this species.

Oh good good. That does make me feel better. From my viewings, Cheerio doesn't seem like an aggressive bird. He only ever tries to attack me if I bother him while he's masturbating on my head (which happens about 3+ times a day). He doesn't actually ejaculate which is probably why he tries masturbating so many times a day.

Sorry. I didn’t mean to. I was just curious on why he never ejaculated.
