I tried to upload an avatar and it is still too big even after I reduced it to almost a point with very low resolution in PhotoShop...
I will try again with a different image later.

Did you save it as a gif? That has a much smaller file size than a jpg or other formats. If all else fails, you can post the picture you want to use here and I'll try to make it work.
