I would like to harness train my baby angels, but I have heard some horror stories about small birds being swooped down upon by wild birds  I know some of you take your birds out on harnesses. Has anyone else heard anything like this?

This will only happen if your bird is flying WITHOUT a harness. I have never heard of a story when the bird was killed while being in a harness. Besides, you will be holding the lesh so the predictor can't possible snatch him while your holding him.

Actually there have been cases where a hawk took a bird that was sitting on its owner's shoulder. So you do have to be cautious and stay alert for predators in the area. Staying under some kind of shelter (like a tree) will help prevent hawks from dropping down out of the sky on you.

Pay attention to your bird too. They're good at spotting birds of prey. I take mine out in a cage and it's very obvious when they've spotted a hawk.

You can safely rule out the larger hawks americans need to worry about.
In the UK we surely have birds of prey but nothing that big (some are big but rare especially near villages and cities).
Crow family birds are a risk, kestrels (have you ever seen one? I wish I did, they are not a common sight), sparrow hawks, but unless you live in the wilderness I think you can relax about that.
And as others say your baby will probably spot them long before you do, alerting you.

The most dangerous thing I had to face taking my guys out with the Aviator was the hardware shop people who all wanted to touch them :D
Ah and in Tesco a worker stopped me while I was exiting, telling me that the next time they wouldn't let me in with a live bird. Meanies!
I bet if I had Perfect Polly they would have said the same thing

I think Perfect Polly would have been more obnoxious than a real bird.

I once saw someone at the grocery store with a lovebird in their purse. The purse was open and the bird was clambering all over it. Probably not in compliance with the health code, but completely adorable!

Thanks guys. I was sort of more concerned about a nasty attack then a full on kidnap. I would be nice to take a dear one with me when I walk my dog. It's possibly a bad idea as I have to be vigilant to what's going on with my dog, let alone scanning the skys for golden eagles, there are shed loads near me! Not really, that would be quite spectacular though, if I didn't have these here critters to worry about. But seriously, there are lots of red kites in the area. Yeah, perhaps I'll put a great deal more thought into this one. It doesn't take much to spook me when it comes to my critters.
Barbara I have seen many kestrels, yes. You can often see them at the side of the road on motorways hunting wee beasties. They're very easy to spot, thanks to their distinctive hovering. BEAUTIFUL things. One of my great loves kestrels.Have you seen Kes? About a boy and a kestrel. Fantastic film. An outstanding piece of cinema. Perhaps don't watch the end if you of tender heart. Screwed me up for for a week. But it also made me want to quit university and become a falconer and live in a hut in a welsh valley. :shizzle:
