So I have not had much luck getting the budgies to be friends with Coyote. He's not interested in them and Cloud hates, well, everything that moves, makes noise, is in any way startling (like the heater turning on), the sound of wind, the sound of cars, the sound of water, the sound of someone walking, the cat breathing, the dog sleeping across the room, and clouds moving across the sky. And when the neighbors get home across the street. Just to name a few. So you can imagine how much she enjoys Coyote's, um, companionship which is basically him ignoring them. In turn, that meant that Ninja and Waffles couldn't get to know Coyote because Cloud starts up with her ack-ack-acking because someone down the block farted which makes everyone go into a frenzy. Therefore, I've kept them in separate rooms and poor Coyote is alone all day when I'm working (which is sometimes 12+ hours in a day) and having my husband and son around doesn't count as companionship to him (yet, we're working on it).

Waffles is my english budgie and he's mellow. So mellow that even without being in any way tame (he was an aviary bird from a breeder), he will hop up on your finger just because it's there. So I decided that I'd try having Waffles move in with Coyote to see what would happen. They're under constant supervision, but so far, I think this may work out. Waffles is calling to Ninja and Cloud a lot still and Coyote hisses and makes some half hearted lunges at Waffles if he gets too close but I actually think this is going to work since Waffles is generally pretty laid back. He started singing and playing with a toy within 2 minutes of being in Coyote's cage. Last night I took Coyote to his bedtime cage like usual and just covered up the daytime cage for Waffles but if things go well, I'd like to have them both together all the time.

Coyote is very interested in Waffles and is already messing around with things in his cage he normally ignores. It's kind of a love/dislike relationship at the moment and Waffles is just "whatever" about the whole thing.

Uh oh, Coyote just went to nibble some of Waffles' chow and Waffles took the opportunity to steal Coyote's favorite perch! This is like watching a weird soap opera.

Birds are better than television lol. It sounds like things are going reasonably well.

Birdy drama is afoot! There is some mild chasing around the cage going on. If things get too serious, I'm going to pull Coyote out for a cool down.

It's helpful if you have a really big cage, to give the birds room to put a lot of space between each other when they want to.

I'm curious what sex Waffle is and Coyote is.

Both boys. I have three budgies, Cloud (hen) and two cocks named Ninja and Waffles. Then Coyote, my boy cockatiel. I just figured that out of the three budgies, the best one to try to make friends with Coyote was Waffles, since he's pretty laid back. Cloud, as I mentioned earlier, is very excitable but Ninja loves her just the way she is, so if Waffles stays with Coyote, Ninja and Cloud will be just fine with each other.

I think the cage is big enough for them both. I need to put in another small, high perch though as that seems to be a point of contention at the moment. I really do think that they'll end up friends once they get used to one another and then I won't feel bad about him being lonely while we're all out of the house.

Plus, I also think I have a good chance at taming Waffles now since he's so laid back. It was impossible when he was with the other two budgies though, since Cloud would flip out over everything. When I just had Cloud and Ninja though, I really did almost have her tamed. Well, mostly I had her to the point where she would step up on my finger after Ninja did but I don't think she would have ever made a good single pet bird. Her personality is just too skittish (which is fine, I love her the way she is and so on and so forth).

Since the budgies have been in the back room, I haven't been able to hang out with them as much as before and I realize now how much I miss their singing and silly antics. They're so acrobatic and poor Coyote looks totally clumsy next to Waffles, who's hanging upside down, crawling around, flitting from place to place in the cage.

I'll post a pic of Coyote and Waffles and their cage setup if they get along enough to make this permanent.

With only two budgies in the room you might be able to work with Cloud better now. More birds means more distractions and it's harder to keep a bird's attention.

It's good that they are both male. Having a female cockatiel in the same cage with a male budgie did not work out that well for me. They started mating all the time.

Well I guess I should say that I'm 99% sure Coyote is male. He sings and talks (picking up words we didn't even try to teach him!) all the time. We're currently working on Sitting by the dock of the bay whistle tune. So I guess he could be a particularly singy female but I'm guessing male.

I would have never guessed that housing a female 'tiel with a male budgie could be an issue if I hadn't read about all the problems you've had with Piper and Emma!

So today went well, I thought. I remodeled the inside of the cage a bit and they seem to like the orientation of all the perches and stuff. Towards the end of the day there were a couple of squabbles and I let Coyote out for a couple of hours to get a break. Overall, squabbles and all, I think it's good for him. I like that he is more active while in his cage instead of just focusing his laser beam focus on me at all times. He messed around with stuff in his cage he's literally ignored since the day I got him. Birds are weird.
