When a lot of people talk about flight recall training, they mean OUTDOOR flight which is very different from indoor recall. The risks are obviously a lot higher outdoors so the training has to be a lot stricter and more serious too. Outdoor recall is only for people who really really really know what they're doing, so if you're only teaching indoor recall be sure to specify that.

Potty training is controversial. There have been problems with birds who learned it so well that they would poop only when their human told them to, and would hold it in the rest of the time. This is obviously not healthy for the bird, and some people think it's best to let the bird follow its normal pooping habits and not try to restrict it.

I keep him on a leash but it's very very long & he still manages to attack & kill. I feed him rabbits & fish & such I think he just plain likes to kill. Can u help me please kind sir? Well.... That's interesting.

Training eagles, as well as any other kind of bird of prey, is very different from training parrots. The best chance he has at taming that eagle learning about the sport of falconry. That would teach the eagle to hunt for only certain kinds of food, and also come back to you without a leash.

But from what the email said, it sounds like that eagle might be in some bad condition, considering it's stuck to a leash in the person's yard. Eagles hunt, it's what they do. No amount of feeding will suppress their need to go out there and find something to kill and eat. Another reason why it may be killing so many people in the neighborhood though, is because it's not being fed enough. All birds have a high metabolism, and birds as big as bald eagles would need a LOT to eat.

The easiest way to answer that email is to tell them that you don't have any experience with birds of prey, and that you are simply a parrot trainer, because parrots and eagles are too different from each other, to be using the same techniques. The best chance that person has to training the eagle, is by looking into the sport of falconry.

However, if I were you, I think it may be better to not answer the email at all, and call the police or local wildlife rescue about the email. They could possibly track it to the person through their email address, and get the eagle into a better place, possibly releasing back to it's native habitat, or putting it in a preserve.

I highly, highly doubt any of that story is true. I mean... come on. It killed all those pets and attacked people? Ha! I'd either ignore him or tell him to go to the SPCA or Humane Society for help (they'll kindly take his "pet eagle" off his hands).

I have a strong suspicion that it's a hoax too. If he really had an eagle that was attacking everyone in the neighborhood (while on a leash yet), they would have reported him to the police long ago and he wouldn't still have his illegal eagle.

Jessi's advice about contacting a falconer for issues with raptor training is good though. Just in case somebody who really does have a raptor ever asks for your advice. But that's not likely to happen, since in the US at least you need a special permit to have possession of raptors, and knowing how to handle raptors is one of the conditions for getting the permit.

I'm having fun imagining what would happen if somebody showed up at the Humane Society with an eagle that they wanted to get rid of lol. There's a wildlife rescue in Arizona that has a bald eagle as one of their education birds and I've seen him up close. Those birds are MASSIVE.

My avian vet deals with raptors as well, so sometimes I see one in there if I go. She also does falconry herself. She has a harris hawk and other hookbills.

Personally, I doubt that any of that is true. Why would he mention that is pet is illegal? How does someone not call animal control if a person or their pet was attacked/killed?
