I will also add my two cents that you will definitely get attention but it won't be the laugh at you kind. People will oooo and aaahh over Rio and ask questions about him, about the harness, can he talk, does he do tricks, can I pet him, does he bite and so on. Kids especially. If you would rather people didn't touch him, figure out what you want to say before you go so you aren't caught off guard and get flustered.

Rio is gorgeous, there's no way you won't get attention with him on your shoulder. :)

in my opinion, a nice large park may scare your bird to death (hopefully not literally)
My tiels spend time outside by the house in a (kind of) aviary and even there, there is lots of scary noises. I do it for sunlight and for them to have a sense of what outdoor environment (their natural habitat) is.
Honestly, I don't quite understand desire of some people to take their parrots to places like store or park, but it's up to them of course.
Same with harness... don't quite understand...for the sunlight birds can be taken out as easy as in the cage with secure lock (no aviary or harness needed). But this is just an opinion.

Different people like different things. I don't understand why anyone would want to get a tattoo lol, but it doesn't bother me when people do it.

Going outdoors is a wonderful enrichment activity for birds who enjoy it. There's a woman on the American Cockatiel Society Facebook page (Anna Chang who lives in Taiwan I think) who posts a lot of videos of her birds' outdoor adventures. She has a lot of cockatiels, something like 18 I think, and she makes homemade flight suits for them and has taught them all to accept it. Whenever the family goes out somewhere, like to the shopping mall or a park or on a bike ride, they'll take one or more cockatiels with them. The birds love it, the family loves it, and the people who meet them love it, so everybody wins. She also made little bibs for her baby cockatiels to wear when she's handfeeding them. It's totally adorable.

awesome!
How large is her human family? Any children under college age? If yes, then she must be a super organized person, and I am very impressed.
I didn't say that people who take birds with them bother me.
I don't know about other countries, but American grocery stores are freezing cold :) like a huge freezer (at least during warm season). I don't think my birds would like that :) Department stores may be different.

Ok here's my take on it....
Go out with Rio, do it slowly so your
comfortable with it and so is he...
Yes people will stare, and ask questions...
Have you thought....its a good way to make
more friends...
Over here where I live in Wales, I must say I've never seen anyone with a bird in a harness... maybe its because the weather s so changeable..
But if I was out and saw a bird on some-ones shoulder I'd want to stop and chat... could be a very good social thing for you ones you get use to it...

Taking your bird out in a cage is very different than taking them in a harness. You can take your bird anywhere without lifting a cage with you. Your bird can stay near you and even go on your shoulder. You can place your bird on trees like their natural habitat. You can take out of the cage time to a whole new level. I love the bird leashes. Dog owner can do it, why not us bird owner? :)

I went outside with him!! I walked a little with him. I didn't want to stress him out so I kept it short. I wanted to get a reaction from people but no one noticed except a taxi driver who stared at me for 2 whole seconds while driving. It was hilarious.
