BTW Coco should totally know how to recognize water. It used to take a long time for the chicks to learn to drink water, but then I figured out that if I gave them a wide shallow bowl of water to play in the would learn to recognize it a lot quicker. They all learn how to drink out of a bowl long before they're weaned.

I guess he does know how to drink water, but it's weird that he might have not been drinking any water.

Weaned means that the bird is able to eat seed on their own, and won't have to rely on their parents for food. It's also when they leave the nest in the wild (usually).

Actually it's called fledging when they leave the nest. They start learning to feed themselves when they fledge, because they don't have any opportunity to do it while they're in the nest - the only food in there is what mom and dad regurgitate to them. It takes about a month for them to get skillful enough to meet all their needs by feeding themselves, and when that happens they are weaned.

I made a screen door for the bird room. It has detachable hinges so I can easily take it completely out of the door frame when I want to, and I can also latch it to keep all those pesky cockatiels inside.

It wasn't hard to make. I made it out of pieces of lumber and hardware cloth (wire) that I had left over after I built the aviary and the ceiling fan cover. That's why there are so many narrow strips of wire going across the door, I was using up pieces of leftover wire. There's more info on the door and the other construction projects here: http://home.comcast.net/~ch_zonie/crafts-carpentry.html
