It's important for baby birds to learn how to fly - it improves their physical and mental health. So if you're going to get an unweaned baby parrotlet, I would let him learn how to fly in an environment that is safe for him and your other birds. Steering and landing skills have to be learned, and babies do a lot of crashing. So the safest place for him to learn is in a fairly small room where he can't build up too much speed, and where you've covered up any windows or other objects that wouldn't be safe for him to splat into. Keeping your other birds out of this room while he's on the loose would be safest for everyone, but if that can't be avoided you could keep the bigger birds in their cages and cover them so they can't nip the parrotlet's toes if he lands on their cage. Once he has good flying skills you can clip his wings if you want to.

There's no way to predict whether he will be friends with your other birds or not. It will depend on his personality. Parrotlets will suddenly become aggressive sometimes, so even if your birds get along well in general you will always need to supervise them when the different species are out of the cage together. When he grows up he will probably be more aggressive when he's hormonal because that's how most parrots are.

Brandon didn't you read my post last on page 1...
Be very very careful or you could end up with an injured bird... As I said... P'lets cannot be trusted with other birds...
All my P'lets are clipped.. as they are like jet engines going around the room...
Good luck

I would follow Jan's advice if I were you. She's the only active member here with experience with the species.

You don't need to cushion the floor unless he keeps falling down into a narrow space. He'll probably be hitting walls and then falling to the floor, but he'll be flapping on the way down so his landing isn't likely to hurt him. If he falls into a narrow space he'll have less ability to flap and might fall harder. My tiel chicks tend to fall down into the narrow space between the big cage and the wall, so when I have fledglings I put a folded-up bedspread at the bottom of that area to give them a softer landing.

Babies start learning to fly after they leave the nest, and the internet says that parrotlets do this at about 4 to 5 weeks of age. In general fledglings will have all their body feathers when they leave the nest, but in long-tailed species like cockatiels the tails will still be a lot shorter than an adult. This might not be the case with parrotlets since their tails don't take as long to grow out.

Don't clip his wings while he's learning to fly. Once he has good skills you can clip him if you want to. At that point you'll have a good idea of his general behavior and whether he uses his flight power wisely or if he does crazy things that you need to control.

Thanks I dont want to clip him unless hes out of control I love watching my birds happy flying.Aww and Chewie will be his brother.I think hes close to 12 weeks.I was thinking of keeping him in a small cage with 1 perch until hes ready.

The internet says parrotlets wean at 6 to 8 weeks. I'm not sure whether you meant your bird or Chewie was 12 weeks old, but if it was your bird he should already be fledged and weaned.

He can fly already IF the breeder gave him the opportunity to learn. Not all breeders do. He should already be weaned at this age too.
