It starts to get cooler here.
I still think that when there is a lot of sun, my birds shouldn't get cold even when it's cooler.
Is 60F (16C) still OK?
I know it depends a lot on what they are used to.
Members in Europe (and everybody else of course), what do you think? Until what temperatures you keep/take your birds out? Do they enjoy to be out when it's cooler?

It does depend on what they're used to. My guys can go outdoors in the winter when it's 60, but if the temperature dropped dramatically to 60 degrees in the summertime it might be too cold for them because they didn't have time to adjust. I've had them outdoors in the winter when it was 45, but only when the sun is shining on them. That temperature might probably be too cold without the sun. If they lived outdoors all the time they could handle the more extreme temperatures better, but they're indoors most of the time.

My birds are all outside whole year round...

even when it starts to freeze.

Most of the aviary birds in europe that are kept outside do have the option to go indoors. This is not the case with mine.

But as Tielfan says, all depends on what they are used to.

I hope Martins birds will make it through winter! :yikes:

EDIT: I think they will- not much wind can blow through my Aviary. A lot has to do with how windy the outdoors is. Because birds can keep warmth within their feathers. But if there's a breeze that would blow the heat from underneath their feathers they would burn all the energy they have to keep warm and succumb to the cold.

Martin's birds should be able to adjust. If you got some indoor birds and put them outside in January it would be a big problem. But you put them outside while the weather was still mild, so as it gets colder they will adjust to it just as your other birds do.

Bjornlefevre, have your birds already been outdoors thru the winter ? how cold is it typically where you live? How do you protect birds from the wind?

Yes my birds have always lived in the aviary outside, even through winter.

On average the temperatures are 10,5°C year around. On a monthly basis the average would be for
Januari: 3,3
Februari: 3,7
March: 6,8
April: 9,8
May: 13,6
June: 16,8
July: 18,4
August: 18
September: 14,9
October: 11,1
November: 6,8
December: 3,9

The coldest I have known winter to become is -10°C and that would be extremely cold for us.

My aviary is built alongside my gardenshed, so is protected from that side. On the far fence and half of the opposite from the shed I put up wooden panels (Collstrop). The side that I left open is usually not one the direction of the wind comes from.

oh I see, the fluctuation in temperature is not very large. I just hope that at least it's sunny there!
Where I live, just recently we had 10C at night while during the day it was above 30C (And after such a hot day 10C at night feels cooooold). This area is also known to have sometimes +20C one day (in winter), and it could drop to -20C in a day (I've see it personally and couldn't believe)
My native climate isn't very far from yours, so it was interesting to watch different type of weather (even though I hated it at the beginning)

This should be a chart with montly rainfall (in dutch, but understandable I think).

I don't think the fluctuations will cause much trouble but I would make sure the birds have the option to go indoors. And with indoors I mean into an isulated room/area. Wheter you put a heating (with or without temperature sensors to activate) in there depends on your budget I think :o
