Ooh! I found a pet bird club in Dublin: http://irishparrotfbc.com/

They haven't updated their website in a long time, so if you're interested in attending a meeting it would be best to contact them and make sure that they're still having meetings. You could also ask them about bird-related events in the local area.

I found a website for an Irish parrot and foreign birds club. It seems it hasn't really been updated in a while though, and not completely in English. Still, you could probably contact them about any events. The events page talks of a "bird sale" that happened a few years back, and I think that might be the same as a bird show, if not similar.

Edit: oh, Carolyn beat me to it.

I can see where you're getting at, chipper. From what I understand, most people who go to them are people who are serious about having a bird, and most may already have a bird or 10. I get what you're saying though, that sometimes it may be concerning, not getting to know where exactly the bird will go.

So I showed Lucy the manikins. They looked at each other for a few seconds. Then both of the finches flew to the opposite side of the cage at once, and Lucy flew to the other side of the room, away from the cage. I guess you can say, she wasn't very impressed.

I might have to make an update thread for the dove. I've decided to put some paper in there to cover part of the wire bottom. I'm afraid the dove doesn't exactly know that he's supposed to eat the grit in the tiny bowl I put In there, and he needs it, as doves can't break seed shells open (they just straight up eat the seed, hull and all). So I was hoping to put some on the paper, so he could peck at it. However, the paper scared him so much, that he just flew from perch to perch, blew off all the grit. So I'm going to have to have to wait until he gets used to it being in there again.

I decided to try the taming method I read online. I used the little ranking system to determine that my dove is "moderately wild", where he will only fly away from me if I try to pick him up. Basically, I brought him to my bathroom, let him fly away from me until he got tired, and tried to get him to step up. After a few attempts, he finally did. I held my hand out flat, and had him stand on the back of it. He stayed there for a while, but his breathing was heavy, and he was obviously exhausted and scared. Judging by how much he freaked out to me putting paper in the bottom as well, I think I might need to wait a while longer, before I try this again. He may still need time to get used to everything.

Most birds can actually grind up whole seeds without grit, and in many cases the seed itself is a lot harder than the shell. Millet is a good example of this. But grit does help improve their digestion by breaking the seed into smaller pieces. I don't know much about what doves eat, but if he'll accept seed that has been soaked or lightly sprouted it will be softer and more digestible than hard seed. You do have to watch out for spoilage though because moist food goes bad after a few hours.
