I agree that you never know. One day Cuddles fell between heavy refrigerator and the wall, into that small gap. She couldn't move, it's a good thing I saw it quickly enough or she would be dead.

We do what we can, but it's not possible to protect birds 100% against everything bad that might happen to them. Most small birds use those rings safely but every now and then there's a freak accident.
Twice I've had a bird get a wing caught between the cage bars during a night fright, and it was through all the way up to the shoulder. That's a pretty narrow opening and it's amazing that they could get a wing through it while thrashing around madly in the dark. But it does happen sometimes, and it's not easy to get them out safely either. Fortunately neither of my birds was hurt. It happened to Snowy a few months ago, and prior to that it happened to a chick.
