I managed to figure out a few things, and here's a tip for everyone else: after I got done setting up my avatar and signature I couldn't figure out how to get back to the main board! But if you look for a link to "Board Index" that's what'll take you there. There are two of these links on the left side of the screen while you're in the control panel. One is near the top of the page and one is near the bottom.

also if you click the phpbb button at the very top in the banner that does it too
