I would do what you're doing. We're past the autumn equinox and your day length should be decreasing pretty rapidly, which means that Mother Nature is saying "DON'T BREED" and this egg is probably an anomaly. If the egg laying continues and you can identify which hen is doing it, you could consider moving her indoors to have a clutch.
Indoors should work, only I don't have a cage big enough... I am home next couple of days so I could build one from wood and wire... Only how the h** am I to figure out which hen it is without sitting there and look at them 24/7...
I don't have a camera...
Fingers crossed it's the stray egg... If not I'm thinking about putting a nestbox up, move the egg in there and then get mom to identify herself that way. Moving her indoors after that so I can give her more light hours.
If I have to guess now and pick one of my tiels, I would put my money on Mrs Tiggy. I've seen her snuggling up to Statler lots as of late... Only she's very young.
There's a better chance it's one of Martin's hens though. They are used to indoors temperatures all year round. And seeing as they have loads of space now compared to the two cages they were kept in before they might think: 'hey, let's expand the family'
Time will tell!
