Today one (I have no cleu who) of my female cockatiels layed an egg!

I spotted a single egg on the dirt and decided to take it away. Since it's not in a nesting box (I didn't put any up) and too late in the season for them to breed overhere. (Soon it'll be to cold outside for chicks.) I am aware that in australia the breeding season does not coincide with our summertime so this might be the reason.

I'm hoping it was just the one egg. But If I do spot a new egg come tomorrow I'm having doubts what to do... I wouldn't like the girl to keep laying eggs and weaken herself, so I don't really want to put up a nestbox this late in the season. So I'm thinking I'll take it away again...

What would you guys do?

I would do what you're doing. We're past the autumn equinox and your day length should be decreasing pretty rapidly, which means that Mother Nature is saying "DON'T BREED" and this egg is probably an anomaly. If the egg laying continues and you can identify which hen is doing it, you could consider moving her indoors to have a clutch.

Is it ok to breed indoors in October it starts getting dark here at around 7:00 pm and in winter around 4:30-5:00 pm

Spring and summer are usually the best time for breeding, but when birds are indoors we can replicate spring and summer conditions by keeping the lights on for a few hours after dark. The indoor temperatures are nice and comfortable too.

Indoors should work, only I don't have a cage big enough... I am home next couple of days so I could build one from wood and wire... Only how the h** am I to figure out which hen it is without sitting there and look at them 24/7...
I don't have a camera...

Fingers crossed it's the stray egg... If not I'm thinking about putting a nestbox up, move the egg in there and then get mom to identify herself that way. Moving her indoors after that so I can give her more light hours.

If I have to guess now and pick one of my tiels, I would put my money on Mrs Tiggy. I've seen her snuggling up to Statler lots as of late... Only she's very young.
There's a better chance it's one of Martin's hens though. They are used to indoors temperatures all year round. And seeing as they have loads of space now compared to the two cages they were kept in before they might think: 'hey, let's expand the family'

Time will tell!

That's good, although it's still possible that another egg might appear before the hormone levels finish dropping.

Since Martin's birds were used to being indoors, it's possible that getting some real sunlight for a change may have stimulated some egg laying. But now they've noticed that the days are getting shorter and realized that it's not such a good idea after all.

Let's hope they find the mood when next summer hits (or shortly before).

I'd love to see some baby tiels in my hands :woohoo1:  :applaud: :loveshower100:

I can see indoors wouldn't be a problem and how they would lean towards the seazons as they are in Australia then...

But hey, panic for nothing. No more eggs found!

Thx for the input guys! :applaud:
